Fez is often considered the cultural center of Morocco. The sprawling alleys of its medina radiate ancient history, and the labyrinthine souks flourish in the old town. Its riads have been modernized with magnificent parks and gardens.
Fastpaced, charming, and utterly romantic, the city eclectically mixes the old and the new, with satellite dishes that can puncture the sky in the form of minarets. We strongly recommend that you spend a few hours in the souks and stroll through the tiny alleys. This is the best way to stumble upon hidden treasures.
The scale of the place can be a bit overwhelming at times, but our guides will introduce you to beautiful artisans (many of whom are old friends), giving you a fantastic insight into the inner workings of the bazaar. You'll learn how knowledge is passed down from generation to generation, from the intricate carving of black cedar to the painstaking painting of zellij tiles. However, the highlight of any visit to Fez is the MedersaBouInania, a beautifully restored former theological college. With its marble courtyard and dome-shaped stalactite entrance hall, this is one of the few religious sites in Morocco accessible to non-Islamic visitors.
